The small block is used to ease the boom into the pocket, followed by temporarily suspending the boom so a permanent cable can be rigged between the top of the boom and the tree.
I use a 3/4 inch cable and 3/8 chain to anchor on the tree.
Why? Because I don't want to die! On that note, always remember to never stand under a suspended load and load test something heavy to verify it's good.
